This was an exhibition Curated by Trevor Cromie (now of 55degrees), while he was Exhibitions Director at The Lighthouse. In 2000 Trevor commissioned 55degrees to produce a series of 6 video diaries with members of the public who had taken an object designed by the Dutch Design Collective ‘Droog’ into their homes for two weeks. We installed robust timelapse and video diary systems in each home allowing us to record long term usage of the object as well as gather opinions and stories from the families. A film was also made with the designers of the objects who were based in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The resulting videos were shown alongside the objects in an exhibition at the Lighthouse as interpretation. We then collaborated on a DVD publication. This saw the designers being sent the Video Diaries and their responses recorded. Both the Exhibition and the DVD were category winners at the Scottish Design Awards. Again these techniques are quite common place now with the Diary Room of Big Brother and the timelapse and designer interaction of Grand Designs. However it is worth remembering that we did this way back in 2000 when both these formats had yet to be invented.
