Glasgow Caledonian University's new Learning Centre ‘The Saltire Centre’ has a number of useful and attractive interactive features courtesy of 55degrees’ innovation.
As visitors enter the Building they pass through a security barrier. An electronic pulse is converted into an RS232 signal and relayed to computers for handling. The Visitor walks forward passing three plasma screens. A butterfly animates across the screens as the visitor passes. Perhaps she notices or perhaps on her next visit when she comes in as part of a group and a group of butterflies flutter across the screens, one for each of them.
She continues her journey into the heart of the building. In front of her is a large screen displaying information graphics. There is a counter telling her how many people are in the building. A Calendar informs of upcoming events. However our visitor is simply looking for an IT workstation to use. One glance lets her see computer usage for each of the five floors as a bar graph showing percentage of usage by capacity. So off to the fourth floor then, it has only 20% usage — all the other floors have 60% and our Visitor wants some peace and quiet. She ascends to the fourth floor in the elevator and then as she enters the study space a gentle “ssssh” sound reminds her that she is entering a quiet zone. Had she chosen another floor an audio prompt would have helped her understand the unique character of that space.
